What is a Tag?
An overview of tags in Creator — what they are, how to view them on your items, and how to add, apply, or remove them.
📋 Overview
This guide explains what tags are in Creator, how to view which tags are on your items, and how to add, apply, or remove them.
Tags are unique labels you can attach to items in Creator for reporting or functional purposes. They let you group specific items into a single reporting category so they appear together in your End-of-Day reports.
A few key things to know:
- You can create as many tags as you need
- An item can have more than one tag
- Tags appear in Cloud reporting to help you filter and analyze sales by category
- A special subset called Functional Tags tell the kiosk to behave in a specific way when a tagged item is scanned (e.g. age verification, container fees)
Two types of tags:
- Reporting tags — group items for EOD and Cloud reporting (e.g. "coffee", "alcohol", "combo")
- Functional tags — trigger special kiosk behavior at checkout. See the How to use functional tags guide for details.
👁️ How to View Tags
Step 1. View tags on a specific item
- Go to creator.mashgin.com and log in
- Find and open the item you want to check
- In the item editor panel, scroll to the Tags field — it sits below the POS ID field
- Any tags currently assigned to the item will appear as gray pills in that field

Step 2. View tags across your entire menu
- In Creator, click By Tag in the top menu bar
- Select the tag(s) you want to filter by. You may select several at once.
- The menu list will refresh and show only items assigned those tags
To see all items and whether or not each has a tag, use the Change Columns view to add a Tags column to your item list.

✏️ How to Update Tags on an Item
Step 3. Add a new tag
- Open the item in the item editor
- Click inside the white Tags box
- Type the name of the new tag
- Click the tag name once you finish typing to confirm it — it will appear as a gray pill when successfully added
- Click Save in the bottom right corner
Use a dash to separate multi-word tags (e.g. hot-food, draft-beer)

Step 4. Apply an existing tag
- Open the item in the item editor
- Click inside the white Tags box
- Start typing the tag name — existing tags that match will appear in a dropdown
- Select the tag from the dropdown list
- Click Save in the bottom right corner

Step 5. Remove a tag
- Open the item in the item editor
- Click the X next to the tag name you want to remove
- Click Save in the bottom right corner

💡 Tips
- Tag names are shared across your entire menu — if you type a new name that already exists, it will show as an existing tag. Always check the dropdown before creating a new one to avoid duplicates.
- Tags are case-sensitive —
Coffeeandcoffeewould be treated as two different tags.
- You can use tags to power discounts, taxes, and fees in Menu Details. A tag applied to an item will automatically trigger any rules tied to that tag.
- For tags that affect kiosk behavior (age verification, container deposit, etc.), see How to use functional tags.
