Creator Discount Types

An overview of the three discount types in Mashgin — Single, Global, and Combo — explaining how each works and when to use it.

🏷️ Overview

🏷️

This guide explains the three types of discounts available in Mashgin — Single, Global, and Combo — and when to use each.

Mashgin supports three types of discounts, each working differently depending on what you want to discount and when:

  • Apply a discount to one specific item → Single Discount
  • Apply a discount to the entire customer order → Global Discount
  • Apply a discount when a customer buys a combination of items together → Combo Discount

What you'll need:

  • The items and discount amounts you want to set up
  • (Optional) Barcodes or QR codes to trigger discounts at the kiosk
💡

Not sure which type to use? Single targets one item, Global hits everything, and Combo rewards buying items together.

🎯 Single Discount

A Single Discount reduces the price of one specific item when it's scanned or selected.

Think of it like a store coupon — "Get 50¢ off this specific bag of chips." It only applies to that one product, nothing else in the cart.

Common uses:

  • Discounting a specific product by a flat dollar amount or percentage
  • Running a promotion on a single menu item
  • Applying a member price to a specific product
💡

Single Discounts can be triggered automatically when the item is scanned, or by scanning a barcode/QR code at the kiosk.

🛒 Global Discount

A Global Discount reduces the total price of everything in the cart at once.

Think of it like a store-wide sale — "20% off your entire purchase today." It applies to all items unless you specifically mark them as excluded.

Common uses:

  • Employee discount programs (e.g., 15% off for staff)
  • Special event promotions (e.g., happy hour pricing)
  • Loyalty reward discounts applied to the whole order
💡

Multiple Global Discounts can stack together on a single order.

👉

You can mark specific items to be skipped from a Global Discount — useful if certain products (like alcohol or gift cards) should never be discounted.

🤝 Combo Discount

A Combo Discount applies when a customer buys two or more specific items together in the same transaction.

Think of it like a meal deal — "Buy a sandwich and a drink, get $2 off." The discount only triggers when both items are in the cart at the same time.

Common uses:

  • Bundle promotions (e.g., "Buy any entrée + drink, save $2")
  • BOGO deals — Buy One Get One free or discounted
  • Multi-item purchase incentives
👉

BOGO (Buy One Get One) is a special type of Combo Discount. When the qualifying items are in the cart together, one of them is automatically discounted.

  1. For barcode/QR-triggered discounts, ensure the correct code is scanned

A discount is applied to items it shouldn't be

Issue: A Global Discount is applying to items that should be excluded (e.g., alcohol, gift cards).

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Go to the Manager Portal and open the item that should be excluded
  1. Enable the Skip Discount tag on that item
  1. Save the change and test again at the kiosk

My BOGO isn't working as expected

Issue: The BOGO Combo Discount isn't discounting the right item.

Troubleshooting Steps:

  1. Confirm the Combo Discount is set up with two item groups — one for the paid item and one for the free/discounted item
  1. Make sure both items are being scanned in the same transaction
  1. The system automatically discounts the lower-priced item unless configured otherwise — check your setup
