How to train items (Posing) – Mashgin Support Articles

📖 Overview

Posing — also called training — teaches your Mashgin kiosk to visually recognize an item at checkout. Every item, barcoded or not, must be posed before it scans reliably.

Pose an item when:

It's new to your menu

Its packaging changes (seasonal, promotional)

It's now served on a tray (or no longer is)

Recognition has become unreliable

Aim for 20–25 poses minimum — more (30–50) for items that can sit in many orientations. The more poses, the more reliable the recognition.

✅ Before You Pose

Add the item to Creator first — you can't pose an item that isn't on your menu.

Check your cameras under Manager Mode → Advanced → Calibration — all 8 cameras need a clear, unobstructed view of the base.

Pose under real lighting — the lighting at posing time should match what the kiosk normally sees in production.

Barcoded items

Non-barcoded items

Step 1. Open the item in Manage Mode

Enter Manage Mode on the kiosk, then in the Items tab:

Barcoded items: scan the barcode

Non-barcoded items: search by item name

You'll see the item's existing poses (or none if it's new).

Step 2. Take 20–25 poses

Place the item on the base and tap Pose. Move it to a different position or angle and tap Pose again. Repeat until you have at least 20–25 good poses.

Keep hands and arms out of frame. Delete any pose that's blurry, off-center, has a hand visible, or obscures the black calibration dots — tap the image and press delete.

Step 3. Verify recognition

Exit Manage Mode, place the item on the base, and confirm the kiosk rings it up correctly.

Tray locations: items also need to be posed on a tray in addition to standard poses. The image will look brighter — that's expected and still a valid pose.

🛠️ Troubleshooting

Item isn't being recognized after posing

Issue: The kiosk doesn't ring up the item after posing is complete.

Fix:

Confirm the item has at least 20 valid poses — delete any with hands, off-center framing, or blurriness

Make sure all 8 cameras are clean and unobstructed

Re-pose the item, spreading poses across different positions and angles on the base
