Can kiosks recognize large items?

How Mashgin kiosks handle large items: small items are recognized on the base, large items should be scanned via the barcode reader under the screen, and the staff screen Pick List is a fast alternative.

πŸ“‹ Overview

Mashgin kiosks are excellent at recognizing small items placed on the dotted area of the kiosk base β€” that's the scanning zone the overhead cameras are tuned for. Large items (cases, jugs, big bags of chips, anything that overflows the dotted area) are harder for the overhead cameras to capture cleanly, so they should be added to the cart a different way.

πŸ›οΈ Ways to Add Large Items

Option 1. Use the barcode reader under the screen

Every kiosk has a barcode reader mounted under the screen. For large items, lift or angle the item so its barcode passes in front of that reader. The kiosk adds the item to the cart as soon as the barcode registers β€” you'll hear the standard scan beep.

This is the fastest option for customers and doesn't require any staff involvement.

Option 2. Use the staff screen Pick List

If your location has the employee-facing display (staff screen) enabled, an attendant can add large items directly from the Pick List without scanning anything β€” just tap the item to add it to the cart.

πŸ’‘ Tips

  • The dotted area on the kiosk base is the recognition zone. Items that stick out past it can cause poor recognition or confuse the cameras.
  • If a customer puts a large item on the base anyway and the kiosk doesn't recognize it, just scan the barcode under the screen β€” it overrides the camera attempt.
  • For high-volume locations that sell a lot of large items, train staff on the Pick List so they can add items quickly during busy periods.
