Cash Rounding Guide - PDI & Glory

How Mashgin's 5¢ cash rounding works for locations with a cash recycler (Glory/PayPod) integrated with PDI — rounding policies, customer experience, receipts, PDI reporting, and FAQs.

📋 Overview

To help locations operating without pennies, Mashgin supports 5¢ cash rounding — rounding the final cash amount to the nearest $0.05. This feature is available to locations using Mashgin integrated with a cash recycler (e.g., Glory, PayPod).

🔑 Prerequisites

  • Reach out to PDI Support to make Enterprise configuration changes necessary to accept rounding amounts in transactions reported from Mashgin.
  • Reach out to Mashgin Support to select and enable a cash rounding policy.

⚙️ How Rounding Works

Cash rounding is applied once to the sale total (exact) after tax and discounts, and only when the final tender is cash. Item prices and tax are never changed by rounding.

For split tender, if cash is final, the remaining balance is rounded. If a non-cash method is final, no rounding is applied.

📊 Rounding Policies Supported

Neutral Rounding

  • Transaction total ending in 1, 2, 6, or 7 cents is rounded down to the nearest multiple of 5 cents.
  • Transaction total ending in 3, 4, 8, or 9 cents is rounded up.
  • Depending on the transaction total, for every sale the customer will pay between 0 and 4 cents more for ➕ rounding amounts, or between 0 and 4 cents less for ➖ rounding amounts.

🛒 Customer Experience

Cash Tendering Screen

Assuming they are tendering in cash and it is the final tender for the sale, on the cash insertion screen they will see:

  • Post-rounding sale total (e.g., $11.75 instead of $11.76)
  • Cash rounding amount (±$0.0X; e.g., $0.01)
  • Amount of cash they've already paid
  • Balance that remains

Receipt

On both print and digital receipts, customers will see the cash rounding amount after the subtotal in the totals block.

📈 Sale Reporting Changes (PDI)

When reporting transactions to PDI for locations that have enabled cash rounding, Mashgin includes a cash rounding tender amount for the transaction in the JSON payload. The amount is negative or positive depending on the specific rounding operation performed.

The Payment Item representing the cash rounding tender has the following attributes set:

Payment Item Attribute
Value
id
"cash"
idQualifier
"rounding"
amount
Cash rounding $ amount applied goes here

For example, for a sale total of $10.52 that a customer pays entirely in cash, the rounding amount would be -$0.02. The transaction posted to the PDI Commerce API would have two payment amounts:

Payment 1

Payment Item Attribute
Value
id
"cash"
idQualifier
"rounding"
amount
-$10.52

Payment 2

⚠️

Please reach out to PDI Support for help making any necessary configuration changes in PDI Enterprise to ingest the rounding amount data Mashgin sends in the transaction payload. This is necessary to ensure reporting accuracy.

🪙 Cash Recycler (Glory)

When cash rounding is enabled for a location, Mashgin kiosks will skip low inventory checks for pennies on the recycler.

Cash recyclers will still accept pennies, but if rounding applies on that cash transaction, then pennies beyond amounts that are multiples of 5¢ will be returned to the customer automatically.

💡 FAQs

1. Are any configuration or hardware changes required to the Cash Recycler?

No, it will work as is. However, you may optionally summon Glory Support if you wish to replace the penny stacker with a nickel stacker for a greater supply of nickels.

2. How will rounding affect Mashgin Cloud reporting?

  • Transaction-level CSV exports will show a column for the post-rounding sale total.
  • All representations of sale totals on the dashboard will reflect post-rounding amounts where applicable.
