How do I assign a dotcode to an item on Creator?

A step-by-step guide to assigning a dotcode label to a menu item in Mashgin Creator.

📋 Overview

A dotcode is the physical label placed on a product that Mashgin's camera system uses to visually identify items at checkout. Assigning a dotcode to an item in Creator links that label to the correct item name and price in your menu.

You'll need to do this when:

  • A new dotcode label has been printed and needs to be tied to an item
  • An item's dotcode has changed or been reassigned
💡

Before assigning a dotcode, make sure the item already exists in Creator. If it doesn't, add it first using the How to add and edit menu items guide. New to dotcodes? Start with What is a dotcode?.

📱

You can also assign a dotcode directly from the kiosk — see How do I assign a dotcode to an item on the kiosk?.

🔵 How to Assign a Dotcode

Step 1. Open the item in Creator

  1. Go to creator.mashgin.com and log in
  1. Make sure you're in the correct location — check the location selector at the top of the screen
  1. Find the item you want to assign a dotcode to using the search bar or by browsing the All Items list
  1. Click the circle to the left of the item name to expand the item editor panel

Step 2. Assign the dotcode

  1. In the item editor panel, locate the Dotcode Label field
  1. Click inside the white dotcode label box
  1. Start typing or scroll to find the name of the dotcode you'd like to assign
  1. Select the correct dotcode from the dropdown list
🚨

Important: You cannot assign the same dotcode twice; you must assign a unique dotcode to each item you choose to use it for.

Step 3. Save your changes

  1. Click Save in the bottom right corner of the item editor
  1. The dotcode is now linked to the item — the kiosk will sync the update automatically
🚨

Important: You must click Save to apply the change. Closing the panel without saving will discard the dotcode assignment.

💡 Tips

  • After saving, allow 1–2 minutes for the kiosk to sync. If the item still isn't recognized, enter Manage Mode on the kiosk and press Sync DB — see How do I access kiosk manage mode?.
  • Dotcodes are location-specific — make sure you're assigning in the correct location before saving.

🛠️ Troubleshooting

Dotcode not appearing in the dropdown

Issue: The dotcode name isn't showing up when you click the dotcode label field.

Fix:

  1. Confirm you're logged in to the correct location — dotcodes are location-specific
  1. Try typing the dotcode name or number directly in the field to search
  1. If the dotcode still doesn't appear, it may not yet be registered in the system — contact Mashgin Support

Kiosk still not recognizing the item after assignment

Issue: The dotcode has been saved in Creator, but the kiosk isn't identifying the item correctly.

Fix:

  1. Confirm the dotcode was saved — reopen the item in Creator and verify the dotcode label field shows the correct dotcode
  1. From Manage Mode on the kiosk, press Sync DB to force a sync
  1. If the item is still not recognized after syncing, the item may need additional poses — contact Mashgin Support, or see What can I do to troubleshoot dotcode labels (ArUco codes)?
