What is a y-cable?
What a y-cable is and why some card readers need one — it injects extra power beyond what the kiosk supplies over USB, splitting into a power branch and a data (USB or ethernet) branch.
📋 Overview
A Y-cable provides extra power to card readers that need more than the kiosk can supply over USB. The cable splits into a “Y” shape: one branch plugs into a power outlet, and the other plugs into a designated port (USB or Ethernet).
Some readers use an Ethernet-based Y-cable instead of USB because they communicate over the network rather than over USB.
⚙️ Parts
- The Y-Cable is composed of two components.
- Main Data Cable: This is the component that connects the Card Reader to the Kiosk.
- One Side connects to the back of the card reader.
- The other side connects via USB-A to the back of the kiosk.
- Power Cable: This cable connects to the Main Data Cable and provides additional power.
- One end connects to any standard 110V outlet.
- The other end connects to the Main Data cable via the Barrel connection.
