How to Print Your Own ArUco (DotCode) Labels
Learn how to print your own ArUco (dotcode) labels using Avery label paper and a printer to help Mashgin kiosks recognize items that cannot be identified automatically.
This guide walks you through printing your own ArUco (dotcode) labels to help the Mashgin kiosk recognize items it can't identify on its own. You'll need Avery label paper and a printer. New to dotcodes? Start with What is a dotcode?.
π·οΈ What Are ArUco Labels? π·οΈ

ArUco labels (also called DotCode labels) are small stickers that help the Mashgin kiosk identify items it can't recognize on its own β usually because the item doesn't have a standard barcode, or the packaging makes it difficult to scan.
When should I use these? Use ArUco codes when items look identical, or the contained item is not visible.

Step 1. Get the Right Label Paper
You'll need Avery 1" Γ 2-5/8" Blank Rectangle Labels (Item #94200). This is the only label size that works with the Mashgin ArUco templates.
You can find them at most office supply stores (Staples, Office Depot) or order online at avery.com or Amazon.
Buy matte-finish labels, not glossy. Glossy labels can cause glare and make them harder for the kiosk camera to read.

Avery Item Number: #94200
Size: 1" Γ 2-5/8"
Layout: 30 labels per sheet
Step 2. Navigate to https://www.mashginmagic.online/
Mashgin ArUco Wizard website will auto populate templates with your items so you can go straight to printing! https://www.mashginmagic.online/
- Load in your desired ArUco Codes ( Manually or from Import )
- Manual Entry:
- Manually add the ArUco Marker and the Label Text
- Select Add Entry to add more than one Label at once.
- Press Create Document to download the Label template filled with your desired ArUco and description.
- Import Entry:
- Export your Creator Menu β see How do I export my menu? for step-by-step instructions
- βΌοΈ Confirm DotCode is selected as an exported value βΌοΈ
- Press Choose CSV File
- Select your Exported CSV File
- The selections will appear below, press Create Document
- Your downloads will have a zip folder with the exported Documents.
Step 3. Print the Template
- Click the link for your label family (from Step 2). This opens the template in Avery Design & Print Online β a free tool that runs directly in your web browser, no download needed.
- Load your Avery #94200 label sheets into your printer.
- Click Print inside Avery Design & Print. When the print dialog appears, confirm:
- Scale is set to 100% β do not select "fit to page" or scale to fit
- You are printing on the correct side of the label sheet (the side with the labels, not the backing)
- Print one test sheet first before printing a large batch.
Always print at 100% scale. Scaling the image up or down will distort the DotCode pattern and the kiosk will not be able to read the label.
Alignment tip: Print a test page on plain paper first. Hold it up to the light against a blank label sheet to check alignment before printing on the actual labels.
Step 4. Apply the Label to the Item
- Peel one label from the sheet.
- Place it on a flat, visible surface of the item β the front or top works best.
- Press firmly so the entire label lays flat with no air bubbles or lifted edges.
- Make sure the label is not covered by other packaging, a price tag, or anything that would block the kiosk camera.
Important: After applying a label, always test the item in the kiosk to confirm it rings up the correct product before putting it out for customers.
Avoid placing labels on curved or rounded surfaces (e.g., the sides of cans or bottles). The kiosk camera needs to capture the full label, flat and without distortion.
π οΈ Troubleshooting π οΈ
Label Not Scanning
Issue: The kiosk doesn't recognize the item even though a DotCode label is attached.
Troubleshooting Steps:
- Verify the label was printed at 100% scale with no stretching or distortion.
- Ensure the label is on a flat, visible surface and is not bent, partially covered, or in shadow.
- Try replacing it with a freshly printed label.
- If the problem continues, contact Mashgin support.
- Please provide an image of the label attached to the item.
Label Falling Off
Issue: Labels are peeling off items after being applied.
Troubleshooting Steps:
- Make sure the item surface is clean and dry before applying the label β oils, moisture, or dust will prevent a good bond.
- Press the label firmly across the entire surface, not just the center.
- Avoid placing labels on surfaces that get wet regularly, such as chilled drink cans or bottles.
- If labels continue to fall off, try another sheet if the Avery sheets are defective.
Print Looks Faded or Blurry
Issue: The printed DotCode pattern looks faded, streaky, or unclear.
Troubleshooting Steps:
- Make sure you are printing at high quality settings, not draft or economy mode.
- Check your printer's ink or toner level and replace cartridges if low.
- Run a printer nozzle cleaning cycle if your printer supports it (usually found in printer settings).
- If using an inkjet printer, let labels dry for 30 seconds before peeling and applying.
Kiosk Rings Up the Wrong Item
Issue: The kiosk scans the DotCode label but charges for the wrong product.
Troubleshooting Steps:
- Double-check the item on Creator, make sure the correct ArUco code is assigned β see How do I assign a dotcode to an item on Creator?.
- Contact Mashgin support β the item may need to be re-mapped in the system.
