How to Modify Fees
Add, edit, or remove fees in Mashgin Creator — including bottle deposits, processing surcharges, and service charges, applied per-item or to your entire menu.
💰 Overview
Fees are extra charges added to item prices — like a bottle deposit, processing surcharge, or service fee. You can create and manage fees directly in Creator under Menu Details > Fees. Use this guide to:
- Add a new fee to your menu
- Edit or remove an existing fee
- Assign fees to specific items, tags, or your entire menu
What you'll need:
- Access to creator.mashgin.com
- The fee name, amount (flat dollar or percentage), and which items it applies to
Fees apply after discounts but before taxes. They appear below the item price on the kiosk and are broken down by name on receipts and EOD reports.
Tip: Fee names appear on your End-of-Day (EOD) reports — use clear names like "Bottle Deposit" or "Processing Surcharge" so they're easy to identify later.
🔍 Fee Types
Mashgin supports two types of fees:
- Flat fee — a fixed dollar amount added per item (e.g., $0.05 bottle deposit, $1.00 service charge)
- Percentage fee — a percentage of the item price (e.g., 2.6% credit card surcharge)
Both types can be applied to:
- All items in your menu
- Specific items by searching for them individually
- Tagged items by selecting a tag that groups multiple items together
Need to tag items first?
If you want a fee to apply to a specific group of items, make sure those items are tagged in Creator before setting up the fee.
See What is a Tag? for instructions.
📋 How to Add or Edit a Fee
Step 1. Log in to Creator and open Fees
- Go to creator.mashgin.com and log in
- Select your location from the top of the screen (if you manage multiple locations)
- In the left sidebar, click "FEES"
- You'll see a list of any existing fees for your location

Step 2. Add a new fee (or open an existing one to edit)
To add a new fee:
- Click "ADD FEE" in the top right corner
- A creation panel will open on the right side of the screen
To edit an existing fee:
- Click on the fee name in the list
- The same panel will open with the current settings pre-filled

Step 3. Fill in the fee details
Fill in the following fields in the fee panel:
Fee Name: Give your fee a clear, descriptive name. This name will appear on receipts and reports.
Fee Type: Choose how the fee is calculated:
- Amount — a flat dollar amount (e.g., $0.05)
- Percent — a percentage of the item price (e.g., 2.6%)
Nontaxable: (optional) Toggle this on if the fee itself should not be taxed. Useful for deposit fees or surcharges that are tax-exempt.
By Item / By Tag: Select what the fee applies to:
- Search by item name — type to find and select specific items individually
- Search by tag — type to find a tag and apply the fee to all items with that tag
- Leave blank — the fee will apply to every item in your menu

If a fee should only apply to some items, assign it to a tag. When new items are added to that tag later, the fee automatically applies to them too — no need to update the rule.
Step 4. Save and sync
- Click "Save" or "Confirm" at the bottom of the panel
- Your changes will sync to the kiosk automatically within 30 minutes
- To verify the fee is working, run a test transaction on the kiosk and confirm the fee appears below the item price at checkout
🛠️ Troubleshooting
The fee is not showing up at checkout
Issue: A fee isn't appearing on the kiosk or on transactions.
Fix:
- Log in to Creator and open the FEES section — confirm the fee is listed and not disabled
- If the fee targets specific items by tag, open one of those items and confirm the correct tag is applied
- If the fee was just changed, allow up to 30 minutes for the kiosk to sync, or manually sync the kiosk and try again
- Contact Mashgin Support if the fee appears correct in Creator but still isn't showing on the kiosk
The fee applies to the wrong items
Issue: A fee is being added to items it shouldn't, or skipping items it should cover.
Fix:
- Open the fee in Creator and check which items or tags are assigned
- Open the affected items and confirm their tags — items that should have the fee need the correct tag, items that shouldn't have it should not
- Update tags as needed and save — changes will sync automatically to the kiosk within 30 minutes
The fee amount looks wrong on reports
Issue: The fee total on End-of-Day or Cloud Dashboard reports doesn't match expectations.
Fix:
- Confirm the fee value is correct in Creator — flat fees charge the same amount per item, while percentage fees vary based on each item's price
- If Pre-Tax Totals look inflated, note that fees are included in that subtotal — this is expected behavior
- If numbers still don't match, contact Mashgin Support with a date range and sample transactions
