How do I import menu items?
Step-by-step guide for uploading a CSV file to import menu items into Creator via Menu Transfer.
π Overview
Importing menu items lets you bulk-add or update items in Creator using a spreadsheet instead of adding them one by one. This is useful when setting up a new location, making large-scale price changes, or copying items from another site.
Tip: Need a properly formatted CSV to start from? Use the Export feature first to download your current menu as a template. See How do I export my menu?
What you'll need:
- A Mashgin Cloud/Creator account
- A web browser (Chrome, Safari, Edge, etc.)
- A CSV file with your menu items formatted correctly
π How to Import Menu Items
Step 1. Log in to Creator
- Open your web browser and go to creator.mashgin.com
- Enter your email and password, then click Sign In
Don't have your login info? Reach out to your manager or contact help@mashgin.com.
Step 2. Open Menu Transfer
- Once logged in, look at the left-hand sidebar
- Find and click "Menu Transfer"
- Click "Import Menu"

Menu Transfer is the same section used to export your menu. Import and Export options appear as tabs or buttons at the bottom of that page.
Step 3. Prepare your CSV file
Before uploading, make sure your CSV is formatted correctly:
- The file must be a .csv (comma-separated values) file β not .xls or .xlsx
- Column headers must match Creator's expected field names (e.g. Name, Price, UPCs)
- Each row represents one menu item
- Do not include special characters or line breaks inside cells
Recommended: Export your current menu first to get a correctly formatted template, then modify it. This avoids formatting errors on import. See How do I export my menu?
Step 4. Upload your CSV
- Click "Choose File" or drag and drop your CSV into the upload area
- Select your prepared CSV file
- Click "Previewβ to review your import for accuracy

Step 5. Review and confirm the import
- Creator will display a preview of the items to be imported
- Review the list for any errors or unexpected values
- If everything looks correct, click "Confirm" or "Apply" to finalize
- If you spot issues, click "Cancel", fix your CSV, and re-upload

Step 6. Verify your items in Creator
- Navigate back to your main menu list in Creator
- Confirm the imported items appear correctly β check names, prices, and any other fields you updated
- Your kiosk will automatically sync with Creator β changes typically apply within a few minutes
That's it! Your imported items are now live in Creator and will sync to the kiosk automatically.
π‘ Tips
- Always export your current menu before importing a new one β it gives you a backup and a properly formatted template
- If you're updating prices for an existing menu, only include the Name, Price, and UPCs columns to keep things simple
- For large imports (hundreds of items), allow a few extra minutes for the kiosk sync to complete
- If you manage multiple locations, import to each location separately β imports are site-specific
- To add items one at a time instead, see How to add and edit menu items
π οΈ Troubleshooting
The import fails or shows an error
Issue: Uploading the CSV results in an error message or the import doesn't complete.
Troubleshooting Steps:
- Make sure the file is saved as .csv, not .xls or .xlsx
- Open the file in a text editor and check for stray commas, line breaks inside cells, or special characters
- Confirm all required column headers are present and spelled exactly as Creator expects
- Try re-exporting a fresh template from Creator and re-entering your data into it
Items imported but prices look wrong
Issue: After importing, some item prices are incorrect or blank.
Troubleshooting Steps:
- Check that the Price column in your CSV contains only numbers β no dollar signs or currency symbols
- Confirm there are no blank rows in the middle of your spreadsheet
- Re-import with a corrected file β importing again will overwrite the existing values
Menu Transfer option is not visible
Issue: The Menu Transfer option doesn't appear in the Creator sidebar.
Troubleshooting Steps:
- Confirm you are logged in to creator.mashgin.com
- Try refreshing your browser
- Contact your manager to confirm your account has the correct permissions
