Kiosk Zero

What is Kiosk Zero?

An introduction to Kiosk Zero — Mashgin’s tablet-based ordering system. Learn what it does, how it works with the Mashgin Kiosk, and how it differs from Byte.

📋 Overview

Kiosk Zero is Mashgin’s tablet-based ordering system — the next generation of what was previously known as Byte. It runs on a dedicated tablet placed at an ordering station, allowing customers to browse a menu, add items to their cart, and complete or queue their order — all without requiring cashier assistance.

Kiosk Zero is designed to work alongside the Mashgin Kiosk (for frictionless payment) and optionally with a Kitchen Display System (KDS) tablet (for kitchen order management).

ℹ️

Kiosk Zero is Mashgin’s replacement for Byte. While the two products share similarities, Kiosk Zero introduces improvements in ordering flow, payment integration, and system configuration. If you’re currently using Byte, contact your Mashgin representative for information on transitioning to Kiosk Zero.

🛍️ Order Mode — How Customers Use Kiosk Zero

In Order Mode, the tablet displays your venue’s menu. Customers can:

  1. Browse menu items organized by station or category.
  1. Add items to their cart.
  1. Proceed to checkout.

There are two checkout experiences depending on your setup:

Direct Payment

The customer pays directly on the Kiosk Zero tablet using a connected payment reader (tap, insert, or swipe). A receipt is printed, and the order is sent to the kitchen.

Pay on Kiosk Mode (QR Flow)

The customer places their order on Kiosk Zero but does not pay on the tablet. Instead:

  1. The order is submitted, and a receipt with a QR code prints automatically.
  1. The customer takes the receipt to a nearby Mashgin Kiosk.
  1. They scan the QR code — their cart is loaded instantly on the kiosk.
  1. They complete payment at the kiosk.

💡

Pay on Kiosk Mode must be enabled in Manager Mode → Settings → Checkout, and a Customer + QR printer rule must be configured. See Kiosk Zero: Settings Breakdown and Kiosk Zero: How to Setup Receipt Rules.

🍳 Kitchen Mode — Order Management for Staff

Kiosk Zero can switch between Order Mode (customer-facing) and Kitchen Mode (staff-facing). In Kitchen Mode, the same tablet displays incoming orders for kitchen staff to reference and fulfill.

KDS Integration

If your venue uses a dedicated Kitchen Display System (KDS) tablet, incoming orders are routed to the KDS instead. In this case, Kiosk Zero stays in Order Mode full-time — kitchen staff uses the KDS tablet to manage order tickets.

💡

When a KDS is in use, do not create a kitchen printer rule on the Kiosk Zero Order Tablet. Kitchen receipt routing is configured on the KDS tablet instead.

🧾 Receipt Printing

Kiosk Zero uses printer rules to determine how receipts are routed. There are two types:

  • Kitchen Receipts — Order tickets sent to a kitchen printer so staff know what to prepare. Used when there is no KDS tablet.
  • Customer Receipts — A receipt that prints for the customer after their order. Can include a QR code (for Pay on Kiosk Mode) or be a standard receipt.
💡

See Kiosk Zero: How to Setup Receipt Rules for step-by-step instructions on setting up printer rules.

📱 Mobile Orders

Kiosk Zero supports mobile order integration, allowing orders placed through a mobile ordering platform to be received and displayed alongside in-person orders.

🔄 Kiosk Zero vs. Byte

Kiosk Zero is the direct successor to Byte. Venues previously running Byte can be converted to Kiosk Zero. After conversion, the experience is similar, but you may notice visual and naming changes across the interface.
