Kiosk

What do the kiosk network tests mean?

A reference for the 7 network tests the Mashgin kiosk runs from Manager Mode — what each test checks and what to do when one fails.

📋 Overview

When you run a network test from Manager Mode → Advanced → Network → Test, the kiosk runs through a series of checks that confirm both your local network and the kiosk's connection to Mashgin's servers. A ✅ next to a test means it passed; an ❌ means there's an issue to investigate.

💡

Most failures are local network or firewall issues — your IT/network team typically owns the fix. Mashgin Support can help confirm whether a failure is on the kiosk side or the network side.

🌐 What Each Test Means

Ethernet Connected

  • Checks whether the kiosk recognizes a live ethernet connection on your network jack.
  • If it fails (❌): The port is dead or the ethernet cable is disconnected or damaged. Reseat the cable and try a known-good CAT6 or CAT5E cable.

Gateway Reachable

  • Checks the kiosk's ability to reach out to the internet through your network gateway.
  • If it fails (❌): Likely a local firewall issue. Contact your local network team to investigate.

DNS Working

  • Checks the kiosk's ability to translate domain names into IP addresses.
  • If it fails (❌): Likely a local firewall or DNS configuration issue. Contact your local network team.

IP Valid

  • Checks whether the kiosk has been assigned a valid local IP address.
  • If it fails (❌): The kiosk is being rejected by the VLAN due to a network configuration issue. Contact your local network team.

Stable Network

  • Tests overall connection quality and looks for packet loss.
  • If it fails (❌): Could be any number of local network issues — packet loss, congestion, or unstable hardware. Contact your local network team.

VPN Reachable / VPN Connected

  • These two tests check the kiosk's ability to reach and connect to Mashgin's servers.
  • If they fail (❌): The kiosk has lost access to Mashgin's servers. First, navigate to Manager Mode → Advanced → Reconnect to Grid to retry the connection. If the failure persists, it usually indicates a firewall problem — contact Mashgin Support to confirm.

💡 Tips

  • All tests must pass for the kiosk to be fully online and able to process transactions.
  • The first five tests (Ethernet through Stable Network) cover your local network — your IT team typically owns them.
  • The VPN tests are about reaching Mashgin specifically — these are usually firewall allowlisting issues.
