Round Up for Charity

Overview and setup for the Round Up for Charity feature — what customers see at checkout, when it does and doesn't appear, and how to enable it for your locations.

📋 Overview

Mashgin supports a Round Up for Charity feature that adds a donation prompt to the kiosk checkout flow. When the customer lands on the tendering screen, they're shown two donation choices: round their total up to the next whole dollar, or pick one of three preset donation amounts.

If the customer selects a donation, the cart summary updates to reflect the new total, and the receipt shows a line item for the donation just above the final Total line.

⚠️

Important limitation: Donations are only offered on the tendering screen. If the kiosk is configured for Pay Anytime and the customer skips the tendering screen, they will not be prompted to donate. Pay Now payment integrations always route the customer through the tendering screen, so the prompt will always appear.

🛍️ How It Works at Checkout

The customer sees the donation options in this order on the tendering screen:

  1. Round up to the next whole dollar — shown at the top of the donation card by default. For example, an order total of $2.75 shows a "Round up to $3.00" option.
  1. Three preset donation amounts — the three amounts you configure during setup (for example, $1.00, $5.00, $10.00).

Customers can pick one option or skip donating entirely. The selection only commits when they continue to payment.

🛠️ How to Enable

Round Up for Charity is enabled by the Mashgin team — it is not a self-serve toggle in Manager Mode or Creator.

Step 1. Decide What You Want to Configure

Before reaching out, have these details ready:

  • Locations: every location where donations should be enabled
  • Charity name: the exact text shown to the customer on the donation prompt (e.g., “American Red Cross”)
  • Three preset amounts: the three monetary values to display as donation options (e.g., $1.00, $5.00, $10.00)
💡

The round-up option is automatic — you don't configure it. It always appears above your three preset amounts.

Step 2. Contact Your Mashgin Representative

Reach out to your Mashgin representative (or contact 📧 help@mashgin.com) with the details from Step 1. The Mashgin team will:

  1. Enable the feature for each location you specified
  1. Configure the charity name and the three preset amounts
  1. Confirm back when the prompt is live on the affected kiosks

Step 3. Verify on the Kiosk

Once enabled, ring up a small test transaction at an affected kiosk and proceed to the tendering screen. Confirm:

  • The charity name is spelled correctly
  • The three preset donation amounts match what you requested
  • The round-up option shows the correct "round up to" value relative to your cart total

💡 Tips

💡

If your site uses Pay Anytime payment integrations and you don't see the donation prompt appearing, that's expected behavior — not a bug. Customers who bypass the tendering screen are not asked to donate.

📊

To check how much your customers are donating, use the Round Up reporting view in Mashgin Cloud (separate Cloud Reporting article — link once migrated).
